EDITORIAL

I'm Going Into Traditional Publishing

As most of you will have now read, I'm currently in the process of setting up a publishing company together with a couple of friends.

It was so good to get so many responses from the letter I sent out a few days ago. Thank you!

We are in great need to begin building up material for publishing. If you have a completed manauscript please drop me an email and tell me about it: mailto:publish@writers-and-publishers.com

And ILLUSTRATORS - we need you! Whether you draw, generate graphics by computer, paint, take photos... we want your portfolio!

Many of you have had questions about this new venture. I will be putting up the details later, but for now here are some clarifying points:

  1. We are a traditional publishing company and will ask, as do other traditional publishers, exclusive rights to your work - this means you cannot have another publisher (of any kind) publish the same. This will be International in its reach and include electronic rights. If a current publisher of your work has anything less than International exclusive rights we will consider publishing your work in other countries.
  2. Non-commissioned articles, illustrations, etc. will be purchased should we decide to use them.
  3. We will also commission articles, illustrations, photos, etc. (and of course have exclusive rights to them)
  4. Our purpose is to publish, market and distribute your book so as to create the greatest number of sales as possible. We intend to have your books on the bookshelves of stores around the world.
  5. We will pay royalties to authors (of course!)
  6. We will pay proof-readers and copy editors per word
  7. We have access to top-tech printing: hardback, softback, calendars, booklets, etc. This is fully professional.
  8. All types of writing (fiction, non-fiction, children's etc.) will be considered (as long as it is in good taste and legal!)

More details to follow!

We look forward to your submissions! Get in early and we can focus on you before we get swamped! ;)

****************************

MANUSCRIPTS PLEASE!

If you have a completed manuscript for a book then send it in and we'll review it! All manuscripts will be read and as we are not yet inundated you'll have more chance of being accepted!

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR MANUSCRIPT

You can post or email your work. Word format is preferred.

Physical manuscripts (or CDs) should be sent to:

Darren Andrews
82 Leaford Crescent
Watford, Hertfordshire
WD2 5JG
England

email: publish@writers-and-publishers.com

Print manuscripts *cannot* be returned.

We prefer full manuscripts at this time but if you have a series of articles or short stories please send them in one file and not in multiple files. Please use Word or a txt attachment rather than putting your work in the body of an email.

FEATURED ARTICLE

Where To Publish?

by Darren Andrews

You may have a completed (or near-completed) manuscript tucked away in a draw somewhere, or perhaps a multitude of articles, essays, etc.

At some point you ask yourself "How can I get this published?" and then, after that, you think to yourself: "Should I publish electronically or traditonally? What about this Print-On-demand (POD) option?"

This is my take...my opinion...

Should you set up your own web site?

You can do this whether your book is in electronic format or not. Most people online will be looking for non-fiction books, especially very informative ones such as 'how-to' books, acadamic and marketing topics.

However, there's no reason why you can't promote your books online even though they are only able to be ordered from bricks-and-mortar stores. That includes fiction.

Setting up an author web site, running your own little ezine, discussion group etc. is an excellent way of keeping in touch and building a community thirsting for your next book...

There's an all-in-one solution to this route - Sitesell's SBI! which will - even if you have no techie knowledge - provide you with the means to build, promote and host your own site (it will also provide you with the ability to run a newsletter, take payments and a host of other benefits all for an incredibly inexpensive price)...

http://www.freecoursescentral.com/sbi.html

(If you want to know more first then take one or more of the free courses at http://www.freecoursescentral.com )

This really is the best all-in-one solution, hands down!

What about POD?

Print-On-Demand (POD) publishing is simply the creation of a physical book one-at-a-time. So, when a customer orders your book, the ebook publisher takes an electronic copy and prints it out and binds it. This way there are no costs for printing books that havenot yet been sold (and may never be sold!).

Where Can I Publish an Ebook (and have POD too)?

http://www.booklocker.com is considered one of the best ebook publishers. It has the spirit of enterprise to it which is always a good sign.

However, you need to read the frank and honest remarks of the owner of this site as to the reasons why you might *not* want to work with booklocker.com:
http://www.booklocker.com/getpublished/published.html

The truth is, there are advantages and disadvantages to all routes. It depends upon a number of factors as to what route you pursue.

Do read the advice in the link above - it is important to know it! (especially the last few paragraphs)

What about traditional publishing?

Even within this area there are differing models such as vanity publishing.

Even though profit margins are greater for ebooks (no printing or delivery costs!), getting a physical book published massively expands distribution potential and thus potential customers.

If you want to get your book in the shops and do not want to spend time marketing it, then the traditional route is the way for you. In some ways (though not for all) successful ebooks (and POD books) can be the early forms of traditional print books. Most ebook/POD publishers will not ask for exclusive rights (i.e. you are free to publish your work with anyone) but when you go to a traditional publisher they will ask for exclusive rights (including electronic rights) to market your book nationally or internationally - with the view to making as much money for you (and thus themselves) as they can.

No one option is correct for everyone but whatever your choice, the Internet can help you promote your book/ebook.

(+) Wordhoard

toothsome - lambent - adj. touching lightly, playing over; softly radiant). noun lambency / adverb lambently

This comes from the Latin root meaning "to lick" (hence a lambitive is a medicine you take by licking it) which has reference to light or flame licking a surface.

Here's the Sample:

A cool breeze lightly brushed her cheek as they rode along. In the distance gulls in graceful flight cried out their lonesome call, and for a moment, she was lost in the serenity of it all.

They made their way down the narrow, very rough roadway, climbing with the switchbacks to a ridgetop that crested a thousand feet above the sea. She was in awe of the great expanse before her. It was rugged, windblown and fogdamp.

They rollarcoasted from timbered gulch to craggy headlands and wheeled along the brink of knife-edged cliffs where Pacific waves exploded with thunderous eruptions of surf and spray. The truck jerked and swayed back and forth as they made their way along the steep hill towards the ranch house. She could barely see the rooftop of the house nestled in a grove of trees to the right of the roadway.

Her mind wandered back to Bayberry where she grew up. Why had things turned out so badly? She could still remember the sorrow in her mother’s voice and the emptiness in her father’s eyes.

MARKET WATCH

Tools, Resources, Services, Products and Opportunities to Help You in Writing, Publishing, Promoting, and in Generating Revenue and Traffic...

(+) Google Adsense

Google is a search engine and is now generally accepted as just about the best out there (knocking Overture off the number one position according to many Internet marketers).

Now it's just launched a new program called Adsense. What is it? Well, basically you allow your site to display the AdWords (the green boxed ads to the right of the screen when you look at Google search results) of their advertisers and they'll pay you according to how many people click on those ads.

Some believe this revenue model could be the beginning of the demise of affiliate programs! I don't know about that, but it is very simple to put in place and that will attract a lot of users.

You join Google (free) and then just insert a piece of code into your site and you're done! They deal with everything else.

I'm testing it in the WAPA. I hate unrelated ads, so this will be my bugbear. If it can be overcome then I might keep them and see how they perform!

Find out more here:

https://www.google.com/adsense/home

If you've got a good traffic site this could be a way to start getting extra revenue in a matter of minutes!
