Should I mention that the fifth Harry Potter book was launched six days ago? ;)

I heard a young girl on the news reviewing the book less than 24 hours after its midnight release. I wonder how an author feels when a year's work is digested in a few hours by a reader!

I was interested in the thirty-minute interview with J.K. Rowling (don't know if you got that in the US). She was asked about her regime for writing and simply responded that she had none - just wrote as often as she could.

She also mentioned the fact that she had written the last chapter of the last book already, which is interesting.

It fascinates me to see how people plan and write books.

CRITIQUE ME

A big thank you to those who have submitted samples for the next Critique Contest on July 10th. And to those who've submitted critiques for the current contest - keep them coming but they must be in before the 10th July!

Remember, for this first contest you get to critique me!

SURVEY RESULTS

I'm ending the survey! Here are the results:

Q1. Do you prefer the email text or online WAPA?

17% online
50% text
33% no preference

Conclusion: The email text version will continue to be available for those who request it from the Bulletin.

Q2. Would you say the WAPA contained enough Internet marketing content?

74% Yes
22% No
4% Yes - too much!

Conclusion: Looks like I'll be keeping this about the same.

Q3. Would you say the WAPA was...

Too long? 4%
Too short? 13%
Just Right? 83%

Conclusion: Gee, I guess I'm doing okay here too!

Q4. What is your favourite part of the WAPA?

5% Jennifer Stewart (Writing Tip)
5% Adverts (people like ads? ;) )
5% Darren Andrews (awww...shucks!)
5% Contest
10% Editorial
18% Articles
18% Wordcraft
32% All (how kind!)

Conclusion: Articles, Wordcraft and Editorial will stay!

Q5. What would youliked to see changed or added to the WAPA?

Almost 50% were happy with the WAPA as it is. Some other suggestions - equally submitted - included: more jobs, more marketing tips, more related links, more about novels, more on copywriting, more marketing articles, more British market information, and cutting out the content listing.

Conclusion: I will be thinking about some minor changes but the WAPA wil stay largely as it is for the foreseeable future - thanks for all those who took part in the survey and for your support of the WAPA.

I should also mention the site review in the Market Watch section - I think you'll find it very interesting. ;)

*IMPORTANT*

Don't forget to read my writing sample in the Contest Corner section and get off that critique before July 10th!

Enjoy the rest of this issue,

To Your Online Writing Success!

The First Steps To A Best-Selling Ebook

by David Garfinkel

(c) David Garfinkel - All Rights reserved

Why do some ebooks sell off the charts, while other ones can barely get off the ground?

You'd be surprised.

The other day, I was having breakfast with a friend who is a world-famous, best-selling "bookstore book" author. I asked him, "Hey - how's your ebook doing?"

His answer: "I've... sold... four."

We talked for a little while about what he was doing. I saw his problem - he was applying his success formula for "bookstore books" to ebooks. And it wasn't working very well on the 'Net.

I told him, "People don't buy ebooks to stimulate their minds or indulge their imaginations. Harry Potter would never make it as an ebook. Authors you see on Larry King or Oprah don't write the kind of books that sell well as digital products on the Net. If he were alive and writing today, even Ernest Hemingway would fall short."

Me, I'm what you would call a best-selling ebook author. But, unlike the New York Times bestselling authors, I don't write any groundbreaking, "brilliant" material to sell on the Web.

What I write is intensely *practical* -- simple, step-by- step, problem-solving, time-saving stuff. With ebooks like that, my sales really do go off the charts.

Now you might accuse me of bragging. But now that I have your attention, how would you like to know my secret for a bestselling ebook?

It's simple.

The ebook must...

1) make a big promise

2) to solve a major, nagging problem

3) for a rabid market.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
AN INVITATION TO JOIN THE EBOOK REVOLUTION!

Never mind the naysayers sharp Internet marketers are making good money with ebooks! (We're talking BIG bucks.) Now, for the first time, an authoritative online manual lays out ALL the details of how to do it. To find out more, visit => http://writers-and-publishers.com/ebksecrets -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

To show you what I mean, here are three examples of ebook ideas.

First, a lame example:

An ebook on creating a more pleasant living environment for yourself by choosing the right wall hangings. This could possibly work as a bookstore book, but it's a TERRIBLE idea for a bestselling ebook.

Why? Because there just isn't a large, rabid group of people laying awake at night, tossing and turning, tortured with the thought, "If only I had the right paintings and tapestries on my walls, then my life would be perfect."

Now, let's move on and look at an OK example:

An ebook on keeping an old junker going without spending a lot of money. This is "OK" because there are always a lot of people who have old, broken-down cars and need to keep them going without putting tons of money into repairs. This problem really does keep them awake at night.

Why is this only an "OK" idea?

Because even though it would make sense from your point of view for these people to spend $19 or $29 on your ebook to save hundreds of dollars in repairs, they are probably watching their pennies and won't be super-likely to buy your ebook.

Sure, they should.

But that doesn't mean they will.

Finally, an excellent example:

An ebook on a how to save A LOT of money selling your own house without using a real estate agent, thus holding onto thousands of dollars you would have otherwise paid in commissions.

This is an "excellent" ebook idea because in America, one in five people move every year - so there's a large market. They're "rabid" because many of them really resent paying real estate agents a large commission, and that commission is a major, annoying problem for these people.

By the way, I have a friend who wrote such a book, and the sales of his ebook have given him and his wife enough money to cover their own mortgage and two car payments every month for several years.

I'd call that a best-seller -- wouldn't you? :)

So, to wrap up, before you dive into your new ebook, ask yourself these three questions:

1. Who is my Rabid Market?

2. What is my Big Promise?

3. What Major, Nagging Problem does it solve?

Answer those questions, and you're well on your way to creating a best-selling ebook on the Internet!

(+) Writers' Wisdom

"Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it."

(+) Writing Tip

Nouns with NO plurals

Some words use the same form for the plural as they do for the singular (and this is common sense when you look at the nouns involved) - by definition, these words refer to a 'group', so it doesn't make sense to have another word.

Some examples: corps, deer, dozen, innings, sheep, species, series.

Copy the first sentence from a book and then finish the paragraph on your own.

(+) Wordhoard

aestival - of or pertaining to summer.

This is the best word I can find to complete our little seasonal adjectival quartet (vernal, brumal, autumnal).

Sometimes spelt 'estival'. It comes from the Latin aestas which means summer.

CONTEST DETAILS AND RULES

One of the most valuable aspects of a writing community or group is critiquing each others' work. This is why I'm staring Critique Contests.

The idea is simple. You submit a small piece of your work and open it up to be critiqued. Then you tell me which critique was the best and I'll send the prize off to the person who wrote it!

Here are the rules:

Sample Writing (to be critiqued):

  • must not exceed 200 words
  • must be in English
  • must provide email address with submission
  • submission will appear in the WAPA
  • submission should be tasteful in all regards!
  • WAPA reserves the right to reject submissions - no questions asked
  • Please submit by July 10th.

Critiquers:

No rules here, make it as long or short as you will. Try to be as complete as possible in your critiques: consider the overall 'feel' of the piece as well as the finer critical points. Provide a balanced critique! Make your critiques more than just an edit.

Your name/link will be mentioned in the WAPA if you win!

Critiques for this first contest should be in by July 10th!

To start the ball rolling I'm providing a sample of some of my writing:

The new day’s sun broke as a flood over the forest sending the darkness fleeing to the deep dells and secret places. A line of silver birches set upon a tapering hill tossed their emerald crowns as if shrugging off the night and welcoming the sudden warmth. Even the Nearurith, still but a small stream this far inland, seemed to redouble its speed as it sensed the light creeping westward over its grassy banks; its restless surface glistened then in a thousand shards of reflected sunlight celebrating the day’s rebirth. The trees lifted their branches and rustled in response to the Nearurith as if greeting an old friend, all except the Great Ones; for unlike their younger kindred the mighty oaks of the forest stood still, their sombre forms preferring instead to pay unmoving homage.

Share Your Best Life Story With The World

- by Jim Edwards

(c) Jim Edwards - All Rights reserved
http://www.thenetreporter.com

When most people sit down to write a book, they expect it will take months to complete the job. They envision working endlessly and toiling over every word until they finally emerge a year or two later with their finished "masterpiece."

Well, that may hold true for traditional authors, but the power of the Internet makes it possible for more innovative authors to not only create books with compelling content, but to do it faster and easier than most ever dreamed possible.

Texas psychologist, Michael Wolf, Ph.D., represents a new breed of author who sees technology not only as a way to bypass traditional publishing and distribution channels that take years to bring books to market, but use the Internet to actually gather the main content for his book.

Understanding that many authors write in a vacuum about things that only seem relevant in their own lives, Dr. Wolf decided to let his audience help him write his books by sharing their specific stories with him through the Internet.

His book series, called "One Lesson Learned," is currently in development at www.onelessonlearned.com.

These encouraging instructional books will contain personal stories from ordinary people who share an important lesson learned from their own life-changing experiences. These books will give both readers and contributors a chance to connect and make a positive impact on each others' lives.

Unlike the popular "Chicken Soup For the Soul" book series which often focuses strictly on inspirational stories, the "One Lesson Learned" series will concentrate specifically on how one person's lesson learned can impact the lives of others in specific ways.

As a practicing psychologist, Dr. Wolf figured out what your grandmother knew all along: the hardest lessons learned usually represent the best lessons to share with others so they don't make the same mistakes.

Most people will experience an event or develop a personal insight that changes their lives forever, though they often don't realize the impact until years later. Unfortunately, the jewels of wisdom contained in those stories usually never extend beyond the individuals involved.

Dr. Wolf hopes to preserve this knowledge through his "One Lesson Learned" book series.

His inspiration comes mainly through his own 20 years of helping people make positive changes in their own lives by discovering and using their own life lessons. He also recognized the healing power of sharing these lessons with others, not only for the reader, but also for the storyteller.

Gathering content through the Internet makes it possible for individuals from all walks of life around the world to share their stories and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

In effect, Dr. Wolf has created a virtual campfire around which we can all sit and gain hard-won knowledge from each other, much the same way our ancestors did before life got so complicated.

You should visit http://www.onelessonlearned.com right now to learn how to contribute a story or to read sample stories, or send an email to: questions@onelessonlearned.com

(+) Free Webhost Recommendation (Change)

The following is an excerpt from an email sent out to former "Write Your Way To Success and Profit" subscribers:

This is to notify you that I am no longer promoting or endorsing the free webhost service, duploweb.com.

Removal of their support system and continued long-term failure of their hosting over the last month or two has left me no other choice.

Thus they have been replaced in the course with a new hosting service which will host a domain for as little as $18 per year and is completely ad free.

You can find out more info about them through this link:

He's launched a new course with the rather unexpected name of "Ezine ANTI-Marketing".

(+) Are Your Emails Getting Through?

If you run an ezine or mail out to any email list, or just use email to send private messages, you may have noticed (or maybe not) that some of your recipients are not receiving them.

I've had a number of personal emails go 'missing' and it's mostly filters that are the problem.

These filters will scan your email and award points for each term found that indicates a probable unsolicited commercial message. Of course, being software and not human, it makes an awful lot of assumptions.

Find an email you sent out recently and send it to:

mailto:spamcheck-dubhdara@sitesell.net

E.g. TESTyour headline here [don't leave a space!]

... with the word TEST (in caps, without quotations), preceeding the subject in the Subject line.

You'll get a report back telling you how you email would fare (i.e. if it we be blocked or not). The results may shock you!

p.s. This is an improved service over the one mentioned a few issues ago, so try it out!
