EDITORIALFilling My Own Content This is a relatively short issue. I'm the major contributor for this one, providing the contest submission and the featured article! Some of you have asked for more content on novels so I've written down some of my thoughts and - hopefully - provided some good resources. I've initiated a new contest (or series of contests I should say) that I think you will find very beneficial. Of necessity I've used a piece of my own fiction writing as the submission for the first contest - so you can see how I like to write! I'm rolling over the prize from the last contest as - apparently - parodies were not too popular ;) (maybe it's more of an English thing?) Oh, and... DON'T FORGET THE SURVEY - Only 5 Questions To Answer! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=31313199528 Enjoy the rest of this issue, To Your Online Writing Success! Darren Andrews, Editor.
FEATURED ARTICLENovel Thoughts by Darren Andrews Yes, a cliché title but what do you expect off the cuff? ;) Writing a novel for a child and one for an adult are very different ventures (though perhaps not as different as some would have you believe). Likewise, writing for the Net (i.e. novels intended to be read online or through an electronic medium) will differ from writing a traditional novel in traditional format. I would seriously question how many people actually read novels electronically. Most ebook sales online are non- fiction. I've never read a novel online - though I might use a web site to preview one. So let's talk about electronic and print novels... >>>Electronic Novels I'm only going to say a few things about this as the main thrust of this article is on print (or traditional format) novels. Electronic novels tend (with good reason) to be short, action-packed, and to the point! Personally, it is rare that I would read such novels (in print or electronically). They are not my pleasure but that doesn't mean they can't succeed within the context of their own niche and purpose. Robparnell's ebook, "The Easy Way To Write a BRILLIANT Novel - in 30 days or less", is an excellent resource for getting into the right frame of mind for writing such books.
You can read a review of this book at: The best ebook publisher I've come across (and you can get Print-On-Demand services too) can be found at: >>>Print Novels Print or traditional novels can be sold online of course, but they are intended to be read offline - snug in bed or on the beach or wherever your fancy takes you! There are a number of genres of novels - and of course differing age ranges they might be aimed at. I mention this because some courses or books on writing seem to lump them all together and give generalised rules which simply don't apply. For instance, you might have read something along these lines before: "Audiences for books have changed over the last X years and they now require more blah-blah-blah and less such-and-such..." While it is true that audiences change this is only a generalisation and books are aimed at niches not everyone. Many books which break the "rules" of the mentors do just fine. Take for instance Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". It consistently hits the number 1 position for best-loved fiction and Tolkien himself is in most listings of the Top ten authors of all time. And it sells like mad! Yet the book seriously breaks many modern "teachings" such as avoiding:
* too much description I actually like large novels - and so do many. One of my favourite set of novels is the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. This man is a master of voluminous writing! The series consists of currently ten books (I'm on book eight) each made up of from 600 to 1000 pages. This is all one ongoing story. Jordan certainly breaks the "rules" about numbers of characters and "not mentioning characters by name if they just appear once". Jordan has about six main characters, and then another dozen or more that are somewhat main, then a multitude of major characters and many minor characters too. At any given time there are at least half a dozen storylines, and perspective changes quite freely from scene to scene. It's wonderful! What makes a good novel? I guess this is highly subjective but here's my take: * It must be so written as to transport me into that world; I must be able to see the rooms, towns, landscape of it; smell the flowers, feel the culture * Its characters must be believable - they must do things, say things, and think things which are credible with their milieu, with their author-given personality * If of the fantasy genre in any way, the new ideas must be believable - I must be able to relate to them. They must somehow be rooted in the real world (for more about this read my article at: http://www.writers-and-publishers.com/essays/d_andrews.html ) * The style of writing should woo me as well as instruct me as to what is going on. I don't want no action, but I don't want only action. I guess the real genious of a writer is knowing what works and not what the rules are ;)

WORDCRAFTInspiration, Tips and Exercises to Help You Write Well (+) Writers' Wisdom"Writing, I think, is not apart from living. Writing is a kind of double living. The writer experiences everything twice. Once in reality and once in the mirror which waits always before or behind." ~ Catherine Drinker Bowen. (+) Writing Exercise Find a descriptive paragraph in a novel and change a few words so as to make the mood different, e.g. from bright and hopeful to dire or dismal. (+) Wordhoard sultry - hot, humid, oppressive. This word was formerly spelt 'sweltry' and comes from the same Old English word which gives us 'swelter/sweltering'. From Old English sweltan, "to die". (+) Free Webhost Recommendation (Change) The following is an excerpt from an email sent out to former "Write Your Way To Success and Profit" subscribers: This is to notify you that I am no longer promoting or endorsing the free webhost service, duploweb.com. Removal of their support system and continued long-term failure of their hosting over the last month or two has left me no other choice. Thus they have been replaced in the course with a new hosting service which will host a domain for as little as $18 per year and is completely ad free. You can find out more info about them through this link: http://www.doteasy.com/index.cfm?A=infopage They are considered one of the best out there! Darren Andrews. (+) Succeed With Your Own Small (or Large) Ezine! Whether you have a large, middling or small ezine, or even if you have none at all then listen up! (I think that includes everybody- ;) ) Dr. Mani Sivasubramanian - who's also a WAPA subscriber by the way! - is the author of 8 books on ezines (email and web-based newsletters) and several sites on the subject. He's launched a new course with the rather unexpected name of "Ezine ANTI-Marketing". "You DO NOT Need A Large List To Succeed" Dr. Mani assures us, the key is to "focus on building SMALL lists"! By trimming your list he teaches you how to skyrocket your profits by 1700% ... or more! So, your ebook not selling too well lately? Your writing services being ignored? It's time for some EZINE ANTI-MARKETING! Read the remarkable *free* report by clicking here now. Darren Andrews, owner of the WAPA Ezine. (+) Are Your Emails Getting Through? If you run an ezine or mail out to any email list, or just use email to send private messages, you may have noticed (or maybe not) that some of your recipients are not receiving them. I've had a number of personal emails go 'missing' and it's mostly filters that are the problem. These filters will scan your email and award points for each term found that indicates a probable unsolicited commercial message. Of course, being software and not human, it makes an awful lot of assumptions. Find an email you sent out recently and send it to: mailto:spamcheck-dubhdara@sitesell.net E.g. TESTyour headline here [don't leave a space!] ... with the word TEST (in caps, without quotations), preceeding the subject in the Subject line. You'll get a report back telling you how you email would fare (i.e. if it we be blocked or not). The results may shock you! p.s. This is an improved service over the one mentioned a few issues ago, so try it out! (+) Writers' "Value" Link Exchange hot! "The World's only True-Blue, Real Link Exchanger that works!"
