The Frog

My word, it's hot. I'm not a lover of such temperatures especially in England's humidity. 82 Fahrenheit (28 C) at the end of May foreshadows (not an apt word perhaps?) a hot summer ahead I think...

I was rather surprised this last month to find out someone had written a poem about me - well, actually a poem about someone with my name ;) This was kind of weird to read:

http://youthofamerica.org/writing/LAURA.htm

(it's at the bottom of that page and entitled "The Frog". - no laughing please!)

Perhaps your name appears in a poem or story somewhere, or perhaps you are a professor or scientist or deep-sea diver...

Why not check out your name by searching for your name at http://www.google.com? (put " around your name).

I'm sure you'll get some surprises...;)

What to say about this issue? Well, I'd draw your attention to the first couple of announcements. A new content list is up and running, and Mary Anne Hahn is looking for subscribers for the WriteSuccess Ezine...

You should check out the f re e ebook in the Market Watch section - it's a sample of the hottest product on the web right now!

SURVEY UPDATE

Let's give you a little taste of the ways things stand in late May...

15% of those surveyed like the online version, but 50% prefer the email text version (35% have no preference).

Articles and Wordcraft are at about level pegging for the most popular parts of the Ezine.

Do you agree or disagree?

Here's your chance to have your say:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=31313199528

Remember, there are only FIVE questions.

Your responses will have a very real influence on the future of the WAPA!

PARODY CONTEST UPDATE

Oh, the Parody Contest. I'll be honest - I've not had any entries as of yet and the deadline's a-looming! Think, all you have to do is write a few sentences and you might win by default ;)

It's a great prize (I have a copy myself) and you get all the bonuses too...

Read about the Contest in the online version at: http://www.writers-and-publishers.com/wapa Deadline: Get it in before the next WAPA goes out on June 13th and you'll at least get an honourable mention!

Enjoy the rest of this issue,

To Your Online Writing Success!

FEATURED ARTICLE

Write Where You Are

Shery Ma Belle Arrieta

I caught the writing bug when I was ten, when I joined an essay writing contest. The topic was: "Where did you spend summer and what did you do?"

I wrote about the summer I spent with my grandparents. I described how grandpa taught me to climb trees, and how soon after that, I discovered how scary it was to climb down from a branch ten feet above the ground. I described how my grandma brewed strong coffee, and how the aroma drifted and lingered throughout their little hut every morning. I described the long walks and spontaneous swims in the rivers I took with my aunts and uncles.

It was a simple topic, but it had a tremendous impact on my life. I knew writing was what I wanted to do.

And now, nearly 17 years later, I can still hear grandpa's laughter, still smell grandma's coffee, still shiver at the memory of how cold those rivers were. Their little hut is forever etched in my memory.

I grew up; now I'm a writer. And whenever I'm stuck and ideas seem to run out, I remember that summer. My grandparents may be gone but they left me with memories I can draw inspiration from. They left me a place I can go back to in my mind -- their home. In a way, they never really left.

And that's enough to make the words come out again. I re-discover the wonder of writing each time I remember where I was the summer before I turned ten.

If you feel yourself running out of words to write, try writing where you are. Stop thinking, worrying, doubting. Simply lean back, close your eyes and take yourself back to that one place that gives you peace. Then for 3-5 minutes, simply write about that place, and how it makes you feel.

Here are 5 prompts to get you started:

1. Where do you go when you want to get away from the pressures of life, family, work, etc?

2. In 150 words, describe the place where you are right now.

3. Where were you last summer/winter?

4. Which room in your house do you spend most of your time?

5. In 400 words, create your ideal place.

(+) Writers' Wisdom

"I get a lot of letters from people. They say 'I want to be a writer. What should I do?' I tell them to stop writing to me and to get on with it."

~ Ruth Rendell.

(+) Writing Tip

This pair of words can easily be confused:

Proceed - means to go on

e.g. You must proceed to the office immediately.

Precede - means to come/ go before

e.g. Your reputation precedes you.

Contributor: Jennifer Stewart. Subscribe to her free weekly Writing Tips: or start your six-part Writing Course now.

(+) Writing Exercise

Find a picture on a book cover, CD cover, etc. and write a paragraph or two about the scene. I find this gets my imagination fired (and the ink flowing) every time.

Extend the scene as your imagination dictates; find what the picture only hints at - and its futurity.

Now find another picture and see if you can move the same story into the new picture!

Try to write a short story - or a chapter - by doing this.

(+) Wordhoard

addle - to muddle, become rotten.

From Old English adela, "mud".

Please send all Wordcraft contributions here. (do not send attachments or large html emails - they will not be downloaded!)

BONUS #4: Free report on Proven Strategy to Getting Your Book PUBLISHED!

CONTEST DETAILS AND RULES

UPDATE: You may now parody a part of and not the whole of the selected text should you wish!

The idea is to write a parody of the assigned passage (below). Entries will be judged on a few points but, most importantly, by how much they make us laugh ;)

Try to follow these guideline. Blatant departure therefrom may disqualify you but we're going to be pretty flexible.

  1. Don't depart from the events of the passage except in paranthetical or flashback additions.
  2. Don't cross the border into totally silliness, but don't make it humourless!
  3. Don't exceed 450 words (the text is about 300).
  4. Some degree of vulgarity or lewdness is often associated and found within parody - not so with this one or it won't be accepted. So there!

Here's the assigned text:

When all of the house that was open to general inspection had been seen, they returned downstairs, and, taking leave of the housekeeper, were consigned over to the gardener, who met them at the hall-door.

As they walked across the lawn towards the river, Elizabeth turned back to look again; her uncle and aunt stopped also, and while the former was conjecturing as to the date of the building, the owner of it himself suddenly came forward from the road, which led behind it to the stables.

They were within twenty yards of each other, and so abrupt was his appearance that it was impossible to avoid his sight. Their eyes instantly met, and the cheeks of each were overspread with the deepest blush. He absolutely started, and for a moment seemed immovable from surprise; but shortly recovering himself, advanced towards the party, and spoke to Elizabeth, if not in terms of perfect composure, at least of perfect civility.

She had instinctively turned away; but stopping on his approach, received his compliments with an embarrassment impossible to be overcome. Had his first appearance, or his resemblance to the picture they had just been examining, been insufficient to assure the other two that they now saw Mr. Darcy, the gardener's expression of surprise, on beholding his master, must immediately have told it. They stood a little aloof while he was talking to their niece, who, astonished and confused, scarcely dared lift her eyes to his face, and knew not what answer she returned to his civil enquiries after her family. amazed at the alteration of his manner since they last parted, every sentence that he uttered was increasing her embarrassment; and every idea of the impropriety of her being found there recurring to her mind, the few minutes in which they continued together were some of the most uncomfortable of her life.

Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 43, pp. 192 Penguin Popular Classic edition.

(+) Free Webhost Recommendation (Change)

The following is an excerpt from an email sent out to former "Write Your Way To Success and Profit" subscribers:

This is to notify you that I am no longer promoting or endorsing the free webhost service, duploweb.com.

Removal of their support system and continued long-term failure of their hosting over the last month or two has left me no other choice.

Thus they have been replaced in the course with a new hosting service which will host a domain for as little as $18 per year and is completely ad free.

You can find out more info about them through this link:

They are considered one of the best out there!

By trimming your list he teaches you how to skyrocket your profits by 1700% ... or more!

So, your ebook not selling too well lately? Your writing services being ignored?

(+) Are Your Emails Getting Through?

If you run an ezine or mail out to any email list, or just use email to send private messages, you may have noticed (or maybe not) that some of your recipients are not receiving them.

I've had a number of personal emails go 'missing' and it's mostly filters that are the problem.

These filters will scan your email and award points for each term found that indicates a probable unsolicited commercial message. Of course, being software and not human, it makes an awful lot of assumptions.

Find an email you sent out recently and send it to:

mailto:spamcheck-dubhdara@sitesell.net

E.g. TESTyour headline here [don't leave a space!]

... with the word TEST (in caps, without quotations), preceeding the subject in the Subject line.

You'll get a report back telling you how you email would fare (i.e. if it we be blocked or not). The results may shock you!

p.s. This is an improved service over the one mentioned a few issues ago, so try it out!
