EDITORIAL

Of Winter and Parodies

I was delighted to receive my AWAD email (A Word A Day) soon after the last issue went out. Why? Well, if you remember I was asking about the adjectival forms for summer and winter, and AWAD supplied me - as if by some hidden knowledge of my desire - with the latter!

How's that for luck - or perhaps we have a person subscribed who wields some influence with the AWAD service? ;)

I'm not going to tell you what that word is (cruel am I not?) - you'll need to scroll down and look it up in this issue's Wordhoard!

That just leaves us to find the adjective for summer!

Now, let's talk about the ongoing WAPA survey...

Let's give you a little taste of the ways things stand at the moment. I've had about one fifth of the responses I would like so there's plenty opportunity left! ;)

20% of those surveyed like the online version, but 45% prefer the email text version (35% have no preference).

The featured article seems the most popular aspect of the WAPA from current statistics, and as far as changes to the WAPA are concerned the most common response has been to change nothing and (second to that) to include more about novels!

Do you agree or disagree?

Here's your chance to have your say:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=31313199528

Remember, there are only FIVE questions.

Your responses will have a very *real* influence on the future of the WAPA!

Oh, the Parody Contest. I think the length of the text may be putting some people off. So here's the deal: You can parody just a section of the selected text if you want. Don't be afraid - I want to read some entries that make me laugh - please? I know there's talent out there...

Lastly, may I encourage subscribers to submit requests (see end of ezine). Few 1000+ newsletters will give you this for free! So do it before I change my mind! ;)

Enjoy the rest of this issue,

To Your Online Writing Success!

Darren Andrews, Editor.

FEATURED ARTICLE

How to Create Your Instant Autobiography!!

by Steve Manning

During my seminars, eventually I reach a point where I ask attendees if they can remember the first names of any of their great grand parents. Two or three people out of 100 can remember one or two names. They're the exception.

Yet these relatives of yours lived, loved and labored in this world less than 100 years ago. They struggled with life's challenges, laughed at the humor and wept at the tragedy. Decade after decade, they gathered information, knowledge, experience.

Yet for most of us, not one of them left us so much as a scrap of paper telling us who they were, what they thought or how they lived.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could go to a shelf, pull down their life and read their advice about love, finances, success, business, family matters… or just what the city looked like back then. Wouldn't you want to sit down and hear your great grandmother or great grandfather talk to you?

Okay. You can't do anything about your ancestors. But you can do something for those generations that are yet to come. It's for those thousands of people, those folks who have your eyes and wonder where they got them, those children who ask their parents and get only shoulder shrugs, those are the people who MUST have your life story.

The words you put down now will touch the future. And it's for those reasons, and so many more, than you MUST write your life story right away.

Now, if you're thinking your life isn't important enough to warrant a biography, just tell me what part of your great grandparent's life you wouldn't want to know about. Which part of your great grandparent's life do you think would be uninteresting?

And if you're thinking that no one outside of your family would want to know about you, guess again. We live in the era that will be, despite technology, the least well chronicled.

Everyone is thinking someone else is doing it. Meanwhile, all the stuff that was on eight inch floppy disks (remember those?) can't even be read. Video tapes can be easily erased (if they're even with us in 20 years). And who's archiving your email?

But the books and the biographies, they're staying around for centuries. And they'll continue to do so. Any life that's worth living is worth recording!!

Yes, let's be honest. Your kids won't appreciate your life story at least, not yet. But they will, and more than you could imagine.

So let's get started making it happen.

The fastest way to get your life story completed is to write down a series of questions (200 is what I recommend in my writing system, but you can start with just a handful). Make sure they're very specific questions. Let me give you some examples.

When you were little and you looked out your bedroom window, what did you see?

What's your most vivid memory involving ice cream?

Describe the person on whom you had your first crush.

How did you learn your most important lesson in life?

Describe your greatest illness.

Tell me about your greatest virtue?

Okay, now comes the tough part. You've got to answer each of those questions with only five minutes of writing.

Think of it. If you've got 200 questions then all you need is 15 hours of writing time (not all at once, of course) and you've got an autobiography that would rival anything out there. No, you haven't described every day of your life, but, frankly, not every day of your life has been interesting. (That's why people find writing a diary so frustrating!)

EDITOR'S COMMENT

Journal keeping is something I struggle with and, though I am interested in family history, I struggle with that too! Can I use the excuse of still being quite young? ;) Probably not.

There are some excellent resources on the Net if you search under "family history", "genealogy", "journal writing", etc. Here's some to start you off:

WAPA subscriber, Doreene Clement, has a great site for journal and would-be journal keepers at: http://www.the5yearjournal.com

Check out the biggest and most-used genealogical database in existence and see if you can find some of your ancestors! http://www.familysearch.org

Inspiration, Tips and Exercises to Help You Write Well

(+) Writers' Wisdom

"Every great and original writer, in proportion as he is great and original, must himself create the taste by which he is to be relished."

~ William Wordsworth.

(+) Writing Tip

Another pair of words often confused is:

Affect - means to produce an effect (always a verb)

e.g. The rain affected her plans.

Effect - means to bring about

e.g. The effect of the rain was felt throughout the countryside.

(can be a noun)

(+) Writing Exercise

I'm not adding a new one until you write that parody! Go on, give it a try - you might surprise yourself! I've made it a little easier too (see Contest Corner section).

(+) Wordhoard

brumal - adj. Pertaining to winter.

From Latin bruma, "winter". Related to the French brume, meaning a mist, fog, or vapour. Brumous means "wintry, foggy".

Includes BONUS items:

BONUS #1: Free membership to the Easy Way to Write Newsletter.

BONUS #2: Free 30 Day personal email coaching.

BONUS #3: Free critique of your manuscript.

BONUS #4: Free report on Proven Strategy to Getting Your Book PUBLISHED!

CONTEST DETAILS AND RULES

UPDATE: You may now parody a part of and not the whole of the selected text should you wish!

The idea is to write a parody of the assigned passage (below). Entries will be judged on a few points but, most importantly, by how much they make us laugh ;)

Try to follow these guideline. Blatant departure therefrom may disqualify you but we're going to be pretty flexible.

  1. Don't depart from the events of the passage except in paranthetical or flashback additions.
  2. Don't cross the border into totally silliness, but don't make it humourless!
  3. Don't exceed 450 words (the text is about 300).
  4. Some degree of vulgarity or lewdness is often associated and found within parody - not so with this one or it won't be accepted. So there!

Here's the assigned text:

When all of the house that was open to general inspection had been seen, they returned downstairs, and, taking leave of the housekeeper, were consigned over to the gardener, who met them at the hall-door.

As they walked across the lawn towards the river, Elizabeth turned back to look again; her uncle and aunt stopped also, and while the former was conjecturing as to the date of the building, the owner of it himself suddenly came forward from the road, which led behind it to the stables.

They were within twenty yards of each other, and so abrupt was his appearance that it was impossible to avoid his sight. Their eyes instantly met, and the cheeks of each were overspread with the deepest blush. He absolutely started, and for a moment seemed immovable from surprise; but shortly recovering himself, advanced towards the party, and spoke to Elizabeth, if not in terms of perfect composure, at least of perfect civility.

She had instinctively turned away; but stopping on his approach, received his compliments with an embarrassment impossible to be overcome. Had his first appearance, or his resemblance to the picture they had just been examining, been insufficient to assure the other two that they now saw Mr. Darcy, the gardener's expression of surprise, on beholding his master, must immediately have told it. They stood a little aloof while he was talking to their niece, who, astonished and confused, scarcely dared lift her eyes to his face, and knew not what answer she returned to his civil enquiries after her family. amazed at the alteration of his manner since they last parted, every sentence that he uttered was increasing her embarrassment; and every idea of the impropriety of her being found there recurring to her mind, the few minutes in which they continued together were some of the most uncomfortable of her life.

Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 43, pp. 192 Penguin Popular Classic edition.

MARKET WATCH

Tools, Resources, Services, Products and Opportunities to Help You in Writing, Publishing, Promoting, and in Generating Revenue and Traffic...

(+) Free Webhost Recommendation (Change)

The following is an excerpt from an email sent out to former "Write Your Way To Success and Profit" subscribers:

This is to notify you that I am no longer promoting or endorsing the free webhost service, duploweb.com.

Removal of their support system and continued long-term failure of their hosting over the last month or two has left me no other choice.

Thus they have been replaced in the course with a new hosting service which will host a domain for as little as $18 per year and is completely ad free.

You can find out more info about them through this link:

http://www.doteasy.com/index.cfm?A=infopage

They are considered one of the best out there!

(+) Succeed With Your Own Small (or Large) Ezine!

Whether you have a large, middling or small ezine, or even if you have none at all then listen up! (I think that includes everybody- ;) )

Dr. Mani Sivasubramanian - who's also a WAPA subscriber by the way! - is the author of 8 books on ezines (email and web-based newsletters) and several sites on the subject.

He's launched a new course with the rather unexpected name of "Ezine ANTI-Marketing".

"You DO NOT Need A Large List To Succeed" Dr. Mani assures us, the key is to "focus on building SMALL lists"!

By trimming your list he teaches you how to skyrocket your profits by 1700% ... or more!

So, your ebook not selling too well lately? Your writing services being ignored?

It's time for some EZINE ANTI-MARKETING!

Read the remarkable *free* report by clicking here now.

Darren Andrews, owner of the WAPA Ezine.

(+) Are Your Emails Getting Through?

If you run an ezine or mail out to any email list, or just use email to send private messages, you may have noticed (or maybe not) that some of your recipients are not receiving them.

I've had a number of personal emails go 'missing' and it's mostly filters that are the problem.

These filters will scan your email and award points for each term found that indicates a probable unsolicited commercial message. Of course, being software and not human, it makes an awful lot of assumptions.

Find an email you sent out recently and send it to:

mailto:spamcheck-dubhdara@sitesell.net

E.g. TESTyour headline here [don't leave a space!]

... with the word TEST (in caps, without quotations), preceeding the subject in the Subject line.

You'll get a report back telling you how you email would fare (i.e. if it we be blocked or not). The results may shock you!

p.s. This is an improved service over the one mentioned a few issues ago, so try it out!

(+) Writers' "Value" Link Exchange hot!
