EDITORIAL

In the Heat of the Early April Sun

Glorious sunshine here in the south of England this week, with temperatures hitting as high as 27 C! I managed to get away from my computer screen (it's a New Year's resolution) and have a little jaunt through a couple of forests - a most inspiring wordless activity for the writer in us all!

Easter is upon us again, and all the trees are blossoming and budding. Great scenes out of the windows from which to gain inspiration. Chocolate's melting though ;(

This issue we'll be focusing a little more on marketing and technical points.

It's come to my attention that there have been some problems with subscribers receiving their WAPA Ezine. I've tried to clear things up my end but one of the increasing problems for anyone who uses email is the dreaded s-p-a-m filters that ISPs and others are using to (probably with- out your permission) block emails you send and are sending (see Market Watch section).

If these problems persist I will have to either send the WAPA Bulletin out as a second email to you, or scrap the email text version WAPA.

What do you think? Actually, I've set up a little survey on this matter, together with a few other questions. Please do take the time to answer it as it will help me decide what to do and change - have your say now at:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=31313199528

(p.s. You can set up your own surveys at SurveyMonkey.com. It's free but you'll have limitations - do register before you set up a survey otherwise you'll lose it!)

I know you hate surveys, right? Well, it's just five questions so please go fill it out at:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=31313199528

Finally, do not forget about the Parody Contest! It ends on April 28th - that's just 10 days to go! Don't deny me a good laugh - or anyone else - I need it! ;)

Happy Easter!

Enjoy the rest of this issue,

To Your Online Writing Success!

Darren Andrews, Editor.

FEATURED ARTICLE

Usborne Books At Home

Donna Herring

[I'm republishing this article from the last issue because so many subscribers failed to receive their WAPA last issue - Ed]

If you’re like me, when you are considering getting into some kind of business, you want a simple, straightforward presentation of what the business is about. I would like to answer some of these questions for you.

Why Become An Usborne Consultant?

1. My main reason in becoming an Usborne Consultant was that I wanted to have access to wonderful, educational books for my children (and myself!). I love books and I have a tendency to buy, buy, and buy. So becoming a consultant helped me get that discount that enabled me to buy even more, if I chose, or just pocket the money. The discounts are anywhere from 15% to 30% with added bonuses!

2. You don’t have to sell; you can just join for your family’s library. To stay ‘active’, all you need to do is buy/sell $25 net yearly! How easy is that!

3. If you want to have a successful business, it’s up to you as to how much time you want to spend on building your business. Is it for extra money or a big business?

What Are Usborne Books?

Peter Usborne started Usborne Books in 1973, and in 1989 Usborne Books at Home was started. Usborne books are in many different countries around the world. Usborne Books have been recognized by many organizations for its excellent and superior educational products. Look at my site for the many awards they have won. Some of the Usborne Books are displayed in the Smithsonian Institute because of their exceptional attention to facts and detail.

Where/How Can I Sell Usborne Books?

1. Book Fairs for Free Books or Fundraisers at schools, day cares, homeschool groups
2. Reading Incentive Programs...reach for the stars!
3. Public Libraries and School Libraries
4. Booths at Conventions or Festivals (my favorite)
5. Home Show/Party
6. Anything you can think of would be a good opportunity and a lot of fun!

Cost to Join

There are monthly specials by which a lot of people join. It can be as small as $20 to join or as much as $199. It just depends on what you are wanting. I personally like the monthly specials, which is the way I came in. You get supplies, as well as books with your kit, sometimes more.

If you would like more information, please email me at mailto:UsborneDonna@aol.com. There is so much more information that you would love to hear, at how you can benefit just by joining, even if you don’t sell! Check out my site and enter to win a monthly $50 free drawing at http://www.UsborneBooksGa.com

Inspiration, Tips and Exercises to Help You Write Well

(+) Writers' Wisdom

"There are no dull subjects. There are only dull writers."

~ H L Mencken.

Source: http://writersservices.com

(+) Writing Tip

Either and Neither.

These are written in the form:

Either...or

and

Neither...nor

As well you may know. Yet the problems often arise when it comes to the use of 'neither' in, for example, such sentences as:

"Neither Austen nor Brontë were science-fiction writers."

This should be:

"Neither Austen nor Brontë

was a science-fiction writer."

The rule: If both things (Austen and Brontë in this case) under discussion are singular, then the verb that follows 'neither' is singular also.

"Neither the Austens nor the Brontës were science-fiction writers" would however be correct.

Don't worry - Jennifer will be back for the next issue, or perhaps neither Jennifer nor Darren will be back ;)

(+) Writing Exercise

I'm not adding a new one until you write that parody! Go on, give it a try - you might surprise yourself!

(+) Wordhoard

nethermost - lowest, deepest.

From Old English 'nithera', meaning lower.

CONTEST CORNER

(+) April Parody Contest

PARODY CONTEST
ENDS APRIL 28TH, 2003

PRIZE

robparnell

The Easy Way to Write a BRILLIANT Novel -- in 30 days or Less

written by robparnell

Includes BONUS items:

BONUS #1: Free membership to the Easy Way to Write Newsletter.

BONUS #2: Free 30 Day personal email coaching.

BONUS #3: Free critique of your manuscript.

BONUS #4: Free report on Proven Strategy to Getting Your Book PUBLISHED!

CONTEST DETAILS AND RULES

The idea is to write a parody of the assigned passage (below). Entries will be judged on a few points but, most importantly, by how much they make us laugh ;)

Try to follow these guideline. Blatant departure therefrom may disqualify you but we're going to be pretty flexible.

  1. Don't depart from the events of the passage except in paranthetical or flashback additions.
  2. Don't cross the border into totally silliness, but don't make it humourless!
  3. Don't exceed 450 words (the text is about 300).
  4. Some degree of vulgarity or lewdness is often associated and found within parody - not so with this one or it won't be accepted. So there!

Here's the assigned text:

When all of the house that was open to general inspection had been seen, they returned downstairs, and, taking leave of the housekeeper, were consigned over to the gardener, who met them at the hall-door.

As they walked across the lawn towards the river, Elizabeth turned back to look again; her uncle and aunt stopped also, and while the former was conjecturing as to the date of the building, the owner of it himself suddenly came forward from the road, which led behind it to the stables.

They were within twenty yards of each other, and so abrupt was his appearance that it was impossible to avoid his sight. Their eyes instantly met, and the cheeks of each were overspread with the deepest blush. He absolutely started, and for a moment seemed immovable from surprise; but shortly recovering himself, advanced towards the party, and spoke to Elizabeth, if not in terms of perfect composure, at least of perfect civility.

She had instinctively turned away; but stopping on his approach, received his compliments with an embarrassment impossible to be overcome. Had his first appearance, or his resemblance to the picture they had just been examining, been insufficient to assure the other two that they now saw Mr. Darcy, the gardener's expression of surprise, on beholding his master, must immediately have told it. They stood a little aloof while he was talking to their niece, who, astonished and confused, scarcely dared lift her eyes to his face, and knew not what answer she returned to his civil enquiries after her family. amazed at the alteration of his manner since they last parted, every sentence that he uttered was increasing her embarrassment; and every idea of the impropriety of her being found there recurring to her mind, the few minutes in which they continued together were some of the most uncomfortable of her life.

Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 43, pp. 192 Penguin Popular Classic edition.

Please CLICK HERE for an example parody of an excerpt from Sense and Sensibility. (WARNING: You agree to view material of an explicitly silly nature by clicking this link!)

MARKET WATCH

Tools, Resources, Services, Products and Opportunities to Help You in Writing, Publishing, Promoting, and in Generating Revenue and Traffic...

(+) Are Your Emails Getting Through?

If you run an ezine or mail out to any email list, or just use email to send private messages, you may have noticed (or maybe not) that some of your recipients are not receiving them.

I've had a number of personal emails go 'missing' and it's mostly filters that are the problem.

These filters will scan your email and award points for each term found that indicates a probable unsolicited commercial message. Of course, being software and not human, it makes an awful lot of assumptions.

Find an email you sent out recently and send it to:

mailto:spamcheck-dubhdara@sitesell.net

... with the word TEST (in caps, without quotations), preceeding the subject in the Subject line.

You'll get a report back telling you how you email would fare (i.e. if it we be blocked or not). The results may shock you!

p.s. This is an improved service over the one mentioned a few issues ago, so try it out!
