from Market Intelligence Reports Writing market intelligence reports (also called "industry reports") probably never enters your mind. It may sound a bit intimidating and foreign. It may sound too out of reach. "I am not an industry expert and I can’t write something of that caliber," you may say to yourself. But what if the benefits are far greater than the "fear"? You either work 9 to 5 or freelance independently. Either way, you don’t receive residual income from your works. In a 9-to-5 job, if you miss a day, you won’t be paid for that particular day at the end of the month. As a freelancer, if you don’t produce and deliver, not only you don’t get paid, you’d ruin your hard-earned reputation. What if there is a way for you to earn residual income many times over your initial effort now? Residual income simply means that when you complete a job, you keep getting paid without putting forth extra effort or work on your part as long as the "final product" of your work still exists and is still being sold. The average industry reports are sold $3,000 a piece and the authors (also called "researchers") earn 25 percent royalty out of the retail price. Thus, earning $5,000 per month is not impossible at all. In fact, it is a conservative estimate. Many market intelligence authors earn much more than that, but they are less likely to disclosing the actual figure. Breaking in and succeeding in market intelligence report writing is much easier nowadays, thanks to computers and the Internet. Researching for industrial information took a lot of effort a few years ago. Now it is more of what and who you know, where to look for and how to get yourself hooked up to the sources of information, even if you don’t have previous experience in the field. And yes, most of these activities can be done online. Naturally, if you know how to operate a computer and perform online research, you already possess two of the most essential skills to succeed in this business. So, wait no more. You can start writing as soon as you want either part-time or full-time. Here are some tips to break into and succeed in industry reports writing based on Write Industry Reports: Work at Home and Start Earning $5,000 in Royalties per Month. First, understand what an industry report really is: who reads it, how the information is arranged, how it is formatted and how the validity of information is tested. Second, understand what you need to do: who to contact for reliable insider industry information, how to locate them (online and off), how to search for responsible secondary data and how to design and collect primary data. Third, write a sample report to send out to research firms. This requires specific information that shows your research capability. Fourth, polish your research skills: no expensive trainings are required. Some free trainings are available online. Fifth, know where to look for research firms that hire freelancers. This information is also available online. Sixth, compile your first market intelligence sample comprising a brief well-designed sample report of at least 1,000 words, a cover letter and your latest résumé. Just make sure to include all the required research-based information in the sample to impress the employer. With this sample, you wouldn’t look "inexperienced" at all. Seventh, once you land the job, there are some "tricky" contractual clauses you must be aware of. Caveat emptor. One of them is the "limited royalty period" clause. You may want to re-consider this clause after consulting with your counselor. Eighth, the most important one, make sure to completely familiarize yourself with the tools of the trades, such as online business and statistical databases, online expert pools and online electronic library accesses, to make your job easier. Writing industry reports is not as hard as it sounds. As long as you know what you’re doing and where to look for the reliable resources, research firms need you now. After all, where else can a writer make $5,000 in residual income per month while enjoying an industry expert status (and waking up at noon again)? (C) Jennie S. Bev, 2003

Editor's Comments and Resources I don't have any so I've interviewed Jennie instead! ;)
Interview With technical writer and author, Jennie's article on report writing is this issue's featured article. We shall be asking her a little more about this subject in this brief interview. DARREN: Jennie, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Let's get started by asking you a little about yourself and your background. JENNIE: Thank you for having me, Darren. I am a freelance writer to the IRS (tax agency), so I assume I am. :D I write business, technical materials and all sorts of non-fiction books and articles. Some people call me a "generalist," but I think non-fiction *is* my specialty. I cannot write fiction at all, probably due to my limited imagination. I’ve been writing since 1994, the year I got out of college. So far there are four books, several book-length reports and over 800 articles published in the United States, Canada and Southeast Asia. This year, I’ve also started syndicating my columns. Writing market intelligence reports is something that I’ve started one year ago, which has incredibly boosted my income and reputation. DARREN: Which industries are more likely to want market intelligence reports? JENNIE: Many market research and consulting firms hire freelance writers to research and write about specific industries, such as food and beverage, technology, health, tourism, consumer goods, etc. These reports are designed to provide an overview of the specific industry, who the key players are, their market shares, trade volumes, current trends and forecast. DARREN: Is there a format in which a market intelligence report should be presented or could we see an example of a report? JENNIE: I’ve included the titles of chapters in a market intelligence report in my e-book: Write Industry Reports, which can be purchased via http://www.WritingGigs.com. DARREN: Would you recommend elance.com, freelancewriters.com, etc. as viable services for those wishing to offer technical writing? JENNIE: Sure, the more exposure the better. DARREN: Can you reveal a source or tool you use, one that has helped you to get started or to run your business? JENNIE: I don’t have any favorite tools in running my writing business. I’m practically my own "machine." My advice is: send off at least five queries every day for more results. You also need to know how to format them for better acceptance by the editors. DARREN: Can you tell us a little about your new book, "Write Industry Reports", such as who it's aimed at and where we can buy it? JENNIE: Not many writers know about writing industry reports for research firms. These reports sell for $3,000 or more a piece and writers can earn $5,000 in royalties or more per month. This e-book shows you exactly how to break into and succeed in this field, even if industry writing is not your forte. You can purchase it via http://www.WritingGigs.com or directly to the seller’s page:http://www.writingcareer.com/bev001.shtml DARREN: One WAPA subscriber said she's been trying to write on the Internet for three years but hasn't made any money; she'd really like to make $5,000 a month writing Intelligence Reports. What would your advice be to her? JENNIE: My first question to her is: what kind of writing do you do? There are many kinds of online writings, which are mostly not exclusive, so people don’t want to spend money to read them. Writing for the Web requires deep understanding on how it works and who reads them. The rules of thumb are: first, you can only get paid if the information provided is exclusive, meaning it cannot be found free from other Web sites. Second, the price is determined by the "scarcity" of the topic. Market intelligence reports, for instance, are the highest priced online writing products because they require a lot of research and relatively technical. Also, the readers are industry people who are willing to spend thousands of dollars to understand their competitors. Your writing must add value to the readers, preferably financial value. If not, you’re likely to be paid very low. I would suggest learning from those who have talked the talk and walked the walk, because they have the wisdom and experience that would save a lot of research time and money. Sure, if you want to experience it yourself, but after three years writing online without being paid, I think it’s about time to open more windows to a career. I myself am always willing to learn from the other writers, so I can grow! DARREN: Thanks again, Jennie. We'll let you get back to work now ;) In case you missed it, here's Jennie's site again: http://www.WritingGigs.com.
