CONTENTS
EDITORIALPoetry, Old English and Spam I intended to speak a little about a TV documentary I viewed a couple of weeks ago. Its subject was the origin of the English language. I seldom watch any TV and was so pleasantly surprised by both the content and its presentation, that I decided I would tell all of you about it in this Editorial. However, there was too much to fit in here so I made an article out of it instead ;) You can read it here: http://www.writers-and-publishers.com/essays/d_andrews.html I'd like to thank everyone for their support, feedback and contributions to the WAPA Ezine - it's great! This issue we are looking at poetry and also (in our Marketing section) how you can test to make sure that your emails (or ezines) are getting through to the people you send them to (1 in 8 may be blocked!). We'll also finish up with our 'different' Christmas gift suggestions (see Announcements section)and, on that topic, may I wish everyone a great holiday season and happy writing! . Now, let's get on with this Friday's offering... To Your Online Writing Success! Darren Andrews, Editor. FEATURED ARTICLENo article on poetry from a subscriber this issue, but I did find a good one at a site I mentioned in the last issue of the WAPA: Lisa Von Drasek's article at FindArticles.com really has all the resources and advice you could ever need, so I'm saying no more than to give it a read:http://www.writers-and-publishers.com/lisa.html Editor's Comment and Resources Stuck for the right word? This is more than a rhyming dictionary! http://www.rhymer.com A host of links to poems, including some excellent resources: http://www.findpoetry.com Okay, okay - I don't write much in the way of poetry and when I do it's kind of deep ;) Here's one from a few years ago: http://writers-and-publishers.com/poems/d_andrews.html
WAPA subscriber poetry-related web site: And of course we couldn't end without the plug for a poetry contest ;) http://www.firstwriter.com WORDCRAFT(+) Wordcraft for WritersThe name of this section of the WAPA Ezine is named after the Old English descriptive name for writing (the Wordhoard subsection below is the OE name for vocabulary). However, this is not the first time I've ever used the word, I've actually used it a few times, one of which was in the setting up of an email discussion group. Although possessed of a small subscriber base, I've had little time to attend to it - so now I'd like to invite you to take a look and, if it's for you, become a member (there's no cost!).

If you think you can write a story in 55 words (any subject) then give it a try here: http://www.newtimes-slo.com/55_fiction/55_enter.html (+) Writers' Wisdom "The genius keeps all his days the vividness and intensity of interest that a sensitive child feels in his expanding world." ~ Dorothea Brande. (+) Writing Tip [This is one I mess up on now and again! - Ed] Not "There's lots of animals at the zoo." "There's" is short for "there *is*" and "lots" is plural. But "There are lots of animals at the zoo." Contributor: Jennifer Stewart. Subscribe to her free weekly Writing Tips: or start your six-part Writing Course now. (+) Wordhoard rubicund - ruddy, reddish, red-faced (L. rubicundus; rubere, to be red) Please send all Wordcraft contributions here. (do not send attachments or large html emails - they will not be downloaded!) MARKET WATCHWhat you are about to read affects or will affect you!The shocking truth is that as much as 1 in 8 emails you send may never reach their intended recipient! Why? Over-zealous software that may exist on your ISP or elsewhere that blocks your messages. Now why would they do that? Well, in an effort to stop businesses sending you junk mail without your permission certain 'spam filters' have been engaged and they search the subject line, header and body text of every email you send as well as every email you are sent. There are different filters produced by different software businesses, but they generally all assign demerits for parts of your email that are suspect, and merits for parts that would seem to indicate a genuine email. The problem is that computers don't really know what is genuine or not, and totally innocent emails can be blocked. I'm not going to give amy examples here (you might not recieve this newsletter if I do!) but you can get a mini- article (with examples) about it if you read down a few more lines and use the tool below... No one likes spam, but no one likes having genuine emails blocked either. So how can you tell if your email or ezine is going to actually get to your recipient or subscribers? Well, here's a free tool that will allow you to run your ezine/email through to see how it is rated by the filters.. ----- Here's how it works... Step 1: Open up a blank email by clicking: mailto:spamcheck-dubhdara@sitesell.net Step 2: Copy-and-paste your subject into the subject line, but start your subject with the word "TEST" (without the quotes, in upper case) so that we know this is a test e-mail. (If the subject does not start with TEST, we'll assume it's real spam and delete it). Here's a sample subject... TESTFlower-Lovers Ezine #007: Peonies for the Yukon STEP 3: Copy-and-paste the rest of your e-zine into the body of the email and simply send it, exactly the way you would send it. ----- You'll get a report back (in seconds, perhaps a few minutes if volume is heavy) telling you how good or bad your e-mail is, from a spam-detector's point of view. You will receive a full, free report of all corrections that you should make to your zine, in order to stay out of the junk folders. It does not, of course, actually comment on *what* you write -- first, it's not that smart. And second, the actual content is your business! ;-) And remember, this SpamChecker is just one feature of the E-zine MailOut tool, which itself is merely one part of the entire system of Site Build It! tools... guaranteed to make any small business succeed online... in a tenth of the time ... at a tenth of the price. For more information about Site Build It!, please see... http://buildit.sitesell.com/dubhdara.html Oh, okay, I know you want to know. This issue of the WAPA scored 5.2 which puts it in the 'the strictest may object' zone. ;) (+) Writers-and-Publishers.com endorses graphic designer Writers-and-Publishers.com is officially recommending Barbara Wilson of http://www.elogodesigns.com as graphic designer for its subscribers.
